Dr. Vijay Sazawal has over 35 years of professional experience in the nuclear industry covering the entire fuel cycle.
Presently, he is the Director of Government Programs at USEC, Inc., a leading supplier of enriched uranium fuel for commercial nuclear power plants worldwide. Dr. Sazawal joined the company in 2002. He reports to a Senior Vice President, who reports to the company CEO.
As director of programs funded or supported by the U.S. federal government, Dr. Sazawal provides corporate program oversight and coordination of various government projects within the company. He analyzes the impact of federal budgets, policies and regulations on various USEC activities, and interfaces with federal officials and with members of the U.S. Congress, as necessary. He is a member of the management team involved in the American Centrifuge Project (ACP), the leading initiative by USEC Inc. to build a state-of-the-art centrifuge nuclear enrichment plant based on American technology.
In January 2011, Mr. Gary Locke, the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, appointed
Dr. Sazawal to the official U.S. Civil Nuclear Trade Advisory Committee (CINTAC) for a two-year term.
Prior to joining USEC Inc., Dr. Sazawal worked at COGEMA Inc. (now Areva NC) for 7 years where his last position was the Vice President of Engineering and Technology. In that position, Dr. Sazawal was responsible for strategic business development, establishing corporate alliances, and management of company marketing and sales force dealing with the nuclear back-end fuel cycle activities, including spent fuel management, wet and dry storage, transportation, reprocessing, and disposal in geological repositories.
Dr. Sazawal completed his doctoral degree in structural mechanics in 1975 and immediately joined Westinghouse Electric Corporation in the Advanced Reactors Division as part of the design and technology team working on the Clinch River Breeder Reactor Project (CRBRP). His tenure in Westinghouse lasted 20 years during which time he rose through successive management positions with responsibility for fast reactors, advanced terrestrial and space reactors, nuclear defense programs, and U.S. government programs to promote safety upgrades of Russian built reactors in Central and Eastern Europe. He was part of the Westinghouse transition team that took over management and operation (M&O) of the Savannah River Site (SRS) from DuPont Company in 1989.
Dr. Sazawal holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Banaras Hindu University (India), M.Tech. in Materials Engineering from the MA College of Technology, Bhopal (India), and Ph.D. in Structural Mechanics from the Michigan Technological University. He is a member of the Sigma Xi, the American Academy of Mechanics, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the American Nuclear Society. He has authored nine published technical papers and articles.
Dr. Sazawal played an active role as a subject matter expert (SME) in the U.S.-India civil nuclear agreement.
